Hello everyone, I trust everyone is doing well. I got a good blog today, paticularily because it deals with a prediciton I made at the beginning of the year. Check it out.
President Obama is trying to keep Democratic unrest from derailing his plans to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp after the Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to yank money for shuttering the prison.
By a vote of 90-6, the Senate approved an amendment to a war funding bill Wednesday that not only blocks supplemental funds from being used to close Guantanamo and move detainees to U.S. soil, but also orders that no funds already in U.S. coffers be redirected toward that purpose.
The Senate also overwhelmingly approved an amendment offered by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that requires a classified threat assessment of each detainee at Guantanamo. It was a severe blow to the impassioned opposition of Sen. Dick Durbin, (D-Ill.), who argued that the release of that sensitive information might jeopardize the prosecutions of the detainees.
Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawaii, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the vote to strip the $80 million Obama had wanted should not be seen as a rebuke to the administration but a "wake up call."
He said it is "up to the administration to fashion a plan that can win the support of the American people and members of Congress."
The amendment Wednesday also precludes the upgrade of any U.S. facility or the building of any new facility to house detainees. The supplemental bill on which senators are voting lasts until the new budget year, which starts on Oct 1.
The president is delivering a speech Thursday meant to shed light on how the administration expects to transfer 240 detainees off the island by January 2010.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney is also giving a dueling speech on national security Thursday at the American Enterprise Institute, bolstered in his escalating criticism of the administration by the Senate's Guantanamo vote.
MY TAKE: Well look a hear, I feel so politically smart right now. I said back in my blog "GITMO detention center to close in 12 months???" 22 Jan 2009, that Pres Obama will issue the executive order and draw out the closing of the installation. I knew Obama had stepped in it when he signed this order because he had no plan to relocate the prisoners. He thought countries would accept these people with open arms based on his [Obama] likability alone. He is finding out the hard way that no one wants these people in their countries, not even in their prisons. If his plan was to bring them to the U.S., Obama didnt consider the security provisions he would have to provide to these clowns just to keep them alive. They would have to be segregated from the entire population or they would surely be killed. Not to mention the new training the prison gaurds would have to undergo in order to care for these people. The extra precautions for the prison, the presiding county and state.
Now his Democrats have turned against him on this one and I am sure Obama is being consoled by Michelle as we speak. You would've thought Obama would've learned from Pres Bush never to go into something and not have a plan. Bush did that on our initial entry into Iraq and now its Obama's turn on GITMO. I think this shows how naive Obama really is. What was he thinking? He just roll up some airplanes and load up the prisoners and drop them off in different countries while chanting "Yes we can?!" Like releasing the interrogation memos, it is coming back to bite him in the butt.
Once again who looks like the smart guy? V.P. Dick Cheney. These days the Democrats are seemingly falling in line with just about everything Cheney says these days. What Democrat wants to do that?! This is why BSNBC wants Cheney to shut up. This is why Saturday night live spoofs Cheney, because they arent going to spoof their messiah Obama.
GITMO will be another problem for Obama that he will end up upsetting the ACLU, New York Times, and other left-wing groups. Like the interrogation photos, Obama is going to see the light.
